Depressed and feeling sorry for herself, Sara has little time to dwell. Jeffrey Tolliver, her husband and police chief, brings her along to pick up one of his detectives, Lena Adams. Lena is in trouble. Sara and Jeffrey drive to Lena's hometown to bring her back to Grant County.

There are more secrets in Lena's very small hometown than what Tolliver expects. Sara's services as a medical examiner come in handy. The town police chief is a rookie, unhelpful, just as most of the townspeople are.

Lena is on the run. She's running from the police and trying to deter Jeffrey from getting involved. Lena discovers surprising news from her past. Not everything she grew up believing is true. Lena is able to clear up a few issues in her past and present that have been hindering her. She finds out that her memory of what she thought was true and what actually happened are at polar opposites in most instances.

Can Lena come to terms with her past and accept it? Can Jeffrey and Sara help Lena? Can Lena help herself without harming the people most important to her?

Ms. Slaughter's vivid scene descriptions capture her characters emotions and motives. Characters show growth and honor in this novel. It is definitely a turning point in the series. This novel's chapters are separated by the events and how they take place all culminating at the end. The last chapter is most unexpected. BEYOND REACH is another hit, in my opinion, in Karin Slaughter's Grant County Series. It will be difficult to wait to find out what happens in the next novel.
