The quilting super sleuths are at it again! Deborah Yoder and her friend Esther find a dead girl floating in a pond as they are on their way to deliver a casserole to Esther's future husband, Tobias. When the local police get involved and begin their investigation, Tobias' cousin, Reuben Fisher, the owner of the pond, seems to be their prime suspect. He was seen coming out of the farmhouse on their property with the girl a few days earlier. Reuben refuses to answer any of the questions the police are asking. Blood on the bottom of his shoe links him to the death and he is taken to jail and charged with the murder.

Deborah seeks out Callie Harper, the new owner of Daisy's Quilt Shop and now Deborah's business partner, to help her do a little sleuthing on the side. After all, they helped to solve another murder mystery just a few months before here in Shipshewana. But with Reuben refusing to talk, even to an attorney, they have very little to work with. The only person he does speak to is Deborah, and that is to tell her to make sure that Tobias and Esther move forward with their plans to marry in a couple of weeks.

Callie has her own mystery to solve. An elderly gentleman stops at her shop early one morning and asks her to find his daughter who has been missing for almost fifty years. When she calls the man's son, she learns that Mr. Bontrager is living in an old folk's home and has dementia. Caleb Bontrager tells Callie to disregard his dad's request, but Callie just can't seem to let it go. She's determined to find out whatever she can about this missing child and possibly reunite the two of them.

When Deborah's and Callie's separate investigations merge together, pieces of their puzzles begin to fall into place, just like putting together an Amish quilt. Will Deborah be able to prove that Reuben didn't kill the girl in the pond? Can Callie find a child who has been missing for fifty years?

Vannetta Chapman's Amish mystery is a true delight. It explores the questions regarding why our lives take some of the turns they do, and why bad things happen to good people. This compelling story is woven together with little details that keep you enticed right to the end, just like the little details of a beautiful quilt. Return to Shipshewana and catch up on the happenings of the Amish community and the group of quilters who have become wonderful friends. THE PERFECT SQUARE is a winner!

Book Summary

There's more to the quaint northern Indiana town of Shipshewana than handcrafted quilts, Amish-made furniture, immaculate farms and close-knit families. When a dead girl is found floating in a local pond, murder is also afoot. And Reuben, brother of Deborah's best friend's fiance, is in jail as the suspect! Reuben refuses to divulge any information, even to clear himself of a crime Deborah is certain he didn't commit. So, with her English friend, Callie---fellow sleuth and owner of Daisy's Quilt Shop---Deborah sets out to uncover the truth. But the mystery deepens when an elderly man seeks Callie's help in finding his long-lost daughter, missing since the days of the 1965 Palm Sunday Tornadoes.

An old man who has lost his past. A young man who may lose his future. Once again Deborah and Callie find themselves trying to piece together a crazy quilt of lives and events-- -one that can bring unexpected touches of God's grace and resolve the tragedy that has shaken this quiet Amish community.
