Aaron Troyer comes to Cashton, Wisconsin, to sort out his uncle's affairs. Uncle Ervin left a wife and four daughters a business they have never been involved with. Aaron finds a group of 12 cabins, called the Plain Cabins, in a state of disrepair. He didn't know what he'd find, but he hoped for better than this. Lydia Fisher worked for Ervin Troyer for a couple of years cleaning the cabins and booking reservations. Aaron is not pleasant to Lydia when he arrives and blames her for the cabins' condition. Trees and shrubs need to be trimmed and shutters need to be repaired. Lydia asks Aaron how she is supposed to do those things. He doesn't have an answer.

Gradually Aaron warms up to his situation and takes charge. He enlists the first person he met when he arrived in Cashton, Gabe Miller, and his wife Miriam to help him formulate a plan. As they implement Aaron's plan, Gabe and his son Seth help Aaron with some of the cleanup and renovations. Lydia gets her sister Sadie to help and the four of them spruce up the Plain Cabins, adding a Plain Store where customers can purchase authentic Amish wares and baked goods. Business is improving and Aaron believes it will support Uncle Ervin's family just fine.

Then one night someone breaks into the store and steals all the goods Aaron secured from local people on consignment. He can't afford to pay them and has no insurance. The Amish believe insurance is gambling. But Aaron discovers he is most concerned about Lydia and her safety. When did he start having feelings for her? And why is he so affected by this break-in?

A HOME FOR LYDIA is another wonderful Amish story from Vanetta Chapman. Chapman is great at developing her characters and shows a very human side of the Amish people. They struggle with the same issues we all struggle with, and there is not always harmony in Amish families. This is a story about change and questioning God's will for our lives. A little suspense and a little romance make this a delightful inspirational to add to your list to read.
