When we left him last, Frank, a former Cuban Special Forces member, had made it safely across the Florida Straits to America. After being processed in Miami, he flies to New Jersey to be with his beloved Magda and her family. Frank gets a job and a room and his new life begins. He also starts to learn English from a tutor, so he can get a better job. He and Magda are still very much in love. After a couple of years, he and Magda marry and have a child. By this time, Frank owns a couple of sandwich shops and is doing quite well, living the American dream. When tragedy strikes, his dreams of life in America with Magna are shattered.

Meanwhile in Cuba, Lieutenant Pino, who is being held responsible for Frank's escape, is sentenced to work on a sugar cane farm. As time progresses, the tables turn for Pino. He is sent to Russia for more military training, then reinstated with the Cuban Army. Pino bides his time as he makes plans to exact revenge on Frank. Will he be able to pull off his plan using a young Cuban Special Forces operative on American soil?

Ms. Sheehy had the privilege of interviewing Frank Mederos and has turned his memories into a compelling and inspiring story. Lazo, a friend of Frank's in Cuba, helped fill in the missing pieces of the story of which Frank was unaware from the late 1960s until the 1980s. Revealing aspects of the Cold War are incorporated in this adventurous tale, as well as political dealings between the US and Cuba during that time period. Frank is even recruited by the CIA to provide military information about Cuba.
