"A clean, honest romance..."

I came to this book without expectations. I have read very few Christian romances, but an Amish romance? Never! CROSSROADS by Barbara Cameron was a surprise. It had an honest feel to it, but surprisingly wasn't all preachy and pompous. The characters had the same problems that people other than Amish have. Whether or not to get married or just live together. Problems with communication and secret behavior. There are life lessons and decisions that anyone can relate to. Faith is a focal part of these decisions told in a non-threatening way.

I cared about Emma, but I liked Isaac more. He seemed to be a more developed character. As an Amish man, he had pressures from both the "Englisch" world and the She was completely shocked to find that Isaac didn't feel the same way.

Emma loves Isaac and has always gone along with whatever he wants. But she is torn between her love and her beliefs. If she goes along with Isaac this time, she risks being shunned and losing all the other people in her life. Will love make up for all the rest?

CROSSROADS was a new literary pathway for me. It was refreshing to read. It was like visiting a foreign land within the borders of the U. S. and a fascinating peek into the Amish way of life. This is book two in the Amish Roads series and I would like to go back and read A Road Unknown book one in the series.

Book Summary

Emma decided long ago that she was going to marry Isaac Stoltzfus. Since she was ten, she’d dreamt of being Isaac’s wife, of fixing up a small farmhouse, of raising boppli together. But now, Isaac’s Rumschpringe has introduced him to new ways—and much to Emma’s dismay, Isaac seems to be enjoying them.

Is the man Emma now sees in Isaac the same man she fell in love with all those years ago? He seems more like a stranger who wears jeans and a short haircut and listens to rock music. He has moved out of his parents home, gotten a job, and worse, wants Emma to join him in the Englisch world. How can she possibly leave behind her family, friends, church—and all the dreams she once had for her future with Isaac? But if she loves him, how can she not?

Emma is at a crossroads. And her decision will change her life forever.
