Iris knows that things have been strained between them for a long time but she truly believed that they would stick it out and provide a stable home for their family. As her life seems to be adrift, she makes the decision to return to her childhood home by the lake, Standish Farm, while the kids are at summer camp. With her perfect sister, Leah, about to get married, she would have to return home anyway, but she hopes that some extra time on her own will help her come to a decision about her life.

Iris has no idea how the summer by the lake will change her forever. Unravelling secrets, sibling jealousy mixed with unconditional love when it is needed the most, finding inner strength, and discovering old and new friendships, are just some of the issues that faces Iris during this lake season. Iris has lost herself during her marriage, and with its end in sight, she struggles to figure out who she really is, and what she really wants. Confronted with her family and the issues surrounding their dynamics, forces Iris to really delve into her past and present so that she can choose her future. Dealing with serious, sensitive issues, there are moments of real sadness, but there are also moments of pure fun, laughter and love.

All of the characters in THE LAKE SEASON by Hannah McKinnon are engaging, with a depth that draws the reader into their lives and longings. THE LAKE SEASON by Hannah McKinnon is a beautiful depiction of family and all of its crazy dimensions, and I highly recommend that you read it.
