BLACKOUT begins at the Peter Pan Motel in New Jersey when Doug Brock, New Jersey State Police Officer is on to something. He calls his partner and best friend, Nate Alvarez, telling him, "I got him, Nate. This time I've got him. Get the FBI and get Conyers." Gun shots erupt, then blackness. Officers arriving on the scene find Doug shot, laying several floors down on the ground. He was either pushed or fell landing on his head. Doug suffers retrograde amnesia, having no memory of the past ten years. While he is recovering from the gun shot wounds, Doug is suspended from the force. No way will that stop the stubborn, strong minded Brock from continuing his investigation. Memory or no memory, he will find a way to stop crime boss Nicolas Bennett, the murdering kingpin he has been trying to nail for years.

As he begins to discover new facts about Bennett and the people around him, bad guys come after him. With the help of Jessie, his ex-fiance, who is a "cyber cop," they retrace his movements before he was shot. His memory still does not return but he is getting warmer. Looks like Bennett is involved with a terrorist attempt to take place in underground parking lots in the Big Apple. With Jessie, and Nate's help, can Doug stop them in time to save countless lives?

David Rosenfelt NEVER lets me down. BLACKOUT is an action filled story with lots of bad guys stopping at nothing to foil the good guys even if it entails cold blooded murder. Violence, a little romance, unique characters and deadly betrayals keep you turning those pages until the conclusion. Always the colorful characters, the dry humor that keeps me laughing, and the always curious twist at the finale. Although I did figure out the surprising leader behind the scenes, I had fun with the ups and downs and twists and turns in this terror filled drama. A little romance between Doug Brock and Jessie Allen added a sweet touch and the relationship between Nate Alvarez, the overweight partner of Doug Brock is hilarious and their relationship close. The terrorist attempt in New York City is well orchestrated and becomes a race against the clock to stop it and save countless innocent people. Finally, Doug's memory comes back slowly. The sight of a Golden Retriever like one he owned, begins the comeback. Then, bits and pieces of the puzzle begin to fit., and the case is solved. Another smash hit for David Rosenfelt. Waiting for his next!

Book Summary

New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock has been after infamous criminal Nicholas Bennett for years. When Bennett kills someone close to Doug, however, Doug's investigation—and his life—start spiraling out of control. He's placed on indefinite suspension from the police force and breaks things off with his fiancé, but he can't let the case go, and he continues an off-the-books investigation on his own. When Doug's former partner on the force, Nate Alvarez, receives a call from Doug saying he's discovered something big, something terrifying, something they need to call in the FBI to handle, Nate is furious that Doug has still been working the case.

But when the call ends abruptly, and shortly afterward Doug is found in a hotel room, shot and in critical condition, Nate’s anger turns to fear. When Doug finally awakens from his coma, however, he has no memory of the case, or even the last several years of his life. But the pull of what he might have discovered is too strong, and he finds himself immersed in a desperate search for truth once again, regardless of the danger.

Once again Rosenfelt has written a propulsive and compelling thriller that will rivet readers from the first page to the last.
