In 1861 on a farm in Howell, Michigan, times are desperate for 18-year-old Cassie Kendrick. Already mentally and physically abused by her drunken father, he demands that Cassie marry the despicable Erastus Leeds, a neighbor who disgusts and frightens her. Cassie decides to run away far and fast so her father can never find her.
Cassie decides her only hope to survive is to disguise herself as a boy and join the Union Army. She easily passes the physical exam and is assigned to Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry, and becomes Private Thomas Turner. Have worked on the family farm all her life, Cassie is very strong and able to keep up with her male counterparts. She's a loner and keeps to herself, but becomes an accomplished sharpshooter. Cassie also volunteers at help at the hospital and eventually becomes a mail carrier and a Pinkerton spy.
Gabe Avery is a handsome photographer hired to capture the war at the front lines, to send back photos of the country being torn apart. Everyone likes Gabe, and he's able to befriend the quiet Thomas Turner, who doesn't' say much. Together they survive the bloodiest battles and save each other's lives more than once. When they see dandelions growing in a ravaged battle area, and the quote "where dandelions bloom, hope remains," is an important discussion between them.
WHERE DANDELIONS BLOOM is a Christian Historical Romance that is filled with interesting facts about the Civil War and so many of its famous battles. Tara johnson weaves faith and forgiveness into Cassie and Gabe's delightful story.
Cassie is a memorable, gutsy, and independent heroine. She is easy to root for even though she is stubborn and sometimes unyielding. She faces many challenges as she searches for her purpose in life and how to find forgiveness for her cruel father. Gabe only wants to protect Cassie/Thomas, who he suspects is hiding something. Together they brave danger and death.
This story is based on a real person, Emma Edmonds. I was surprised to learn over 400 women served as soldiers with hidden identities during that war. The solid research is evident from author Tara Johnson. She paints a vivid picture of pain, misery, suffering, and death. She also weaves a sweet spiritual theme into this bittersweet story. Historical fiction is my favorite genre and this one hit the spot. Thank you, Tara Johnson. I look forward to more!
