Doug Brock, a Lieutenant in the New Jersey State Police, is still suffering after being shot in the line of duty, recovering from a head wound and amnesia, specifically his fiancee, and fellow cop, because he had no memory of her. Then he proceeded to "refall in love with her." Now living together, it is time to regain her trust and admiration and move on in their relationship.

Doug and his partner, Nate, who I found so humorous especially his eating habits, are called to the scene of a murder that has all the markings of a cold case that has Doug wondering if he had made a wrong decision. This victim was killed after playing tennis at the Eastside Park in Patterson, New Jersey. Shot through the heart, by a sniper at long range and the ballistics are a match to the murder 18 months before. That victim was Walter Brookings. This victim is identified as Alex Randowsky, a local attorney. What do they have in common? Why were they killed?

When I see a new David Rosenfelt book, I know I will enjoy an absorbing plot filled with a colorful cast of characters. I will laugh at the sarcastic and fun humor, and there will ALWAYS be a new furry friend friend. This time it is Bobo who steals my heart and adds to the thrilling adventure that I read from cover to cover in one sitting. BLACK AND BLUE does it again! When Doug receives anonymous letters from the killer taunting him about the kills, he, Nate and his fellow cop girl friend, Jessie can find no helpful clues on the letters. The bodies begin to pile up and have no rhyme or reason as to why. As Doug races to unscramble the pieces of the puzzle, a very complicated plot begins to emerge. Time is running out.

I enjoyed the delightful cameo appearance by Andy Carpenter who is representing the prime suspect, Danny Phelan. And we know Andy NEVER represents a guilty man! Julie Phelan, his daughter, is a prominent character and is trying to prove her father's innocence. Her fiancee, James McKinney provides a hideaway for Phelan when he has to run. A daring adventure unfolds all around the Garden State as the chase gets closer and closer to the killer. I guessed the identity, and I was proud. Another new and direct hit from David Rosenfeld. You never let me down, and I hope Bobo returns.

Book Summary

The next exciting installment in bestselling David Rosenfelt's Doug Brock series.

Doug Brock hasn't had it easy since his getting shot in the line of duty as a New Jersey state police officer. Between the amnesia and having to solve two murder cases, it hasn't been the most restful recovery. He’s slowly earning back the trust of his girlfriend Jessie, since he doesn’t remember their breakup, and has focused on new crimes with his partner, Nate.

But now an old case of Doug’s has resurfaced, and it’s up to Doug to retrace his steps – steps he can’t remember – to solve the case. Eighteen months ago, Walter Brookings was shot through the heart. With no clear motive and no similar murders, the investigation stalled and became a cold case.

When another man is murdered in the same fashion and the ballistics come back as a match, Doug begins to reinvestigate, and starts to question his own actions from the previous investigation.

Finally, what Doug uncovers may be more dangerous than any case he’s faced yet.
