The second installment in the A Goddess of Greene St. Mystery series is absolute fun. A BIG FAT GREEK MURDER hits all the right notes when Athena Spencer embarks on a murder investigation after the groom is killed before his rehearsal dinner. With an array of viable suspects, Athena has her job cut out for her and she finds herself dealing with cheating groom rumors, psychotic bridesmaids, pet raccoons, family imprisonments, and plenty of Greek food to round out the festivities.
Heiress Mandy Black and Personal Trainer Brady Rogers are holding their rehearsal dinner at Athena’s parent’s Greek diner. Athena’s sister and local hairdresser, Selene, is one of the bridesmaids. The food is ready, but the groom is nowhere to be found. When two groomsmen go to check on him, they find Brady dead with a pair of scissors in his back. It’s not long before suspicion focuses on Selene Spencer. Her salon scissors are missing and she didn’t particularly like the groom. Athena knows her sister is not responsible for the murder, but how does she persuade the police of Selene’s innocence?
To make matters worse, there were rumors that Brady was cheating on Mandy and all the other bridesmaids point at Selene. Who is trying to set Selene up and why? Could it be Brady’s past stalker? Or the bride’s brother trying to protect the family fortune? Or did the bride herself take matters into her own hands? As Athena starts investigating, handsome Case Donnelly joins her team, and the two start interviewing suspects. Can they uncover the motive and piece the mystery together in time to free Selene before she is formally charged with murder?
Athena Spencer is a relatable and fun character. She is restarting her life after a bad divorce and she is raising her ten-year-old son back home in Sequoia, Michigan. She is surrounded and supported by her Greek family and she works in their businesses and writes a blog on the side. There is plenty of family dynamics that play well in the novel, especially when the family is faced with dilemmas. The plotting of the mystery is also perfect. It moves forward quickly and logically and it reveals just enough clues to throw suspicion one way or the other. Case is the perfect sidekick for Athena and the undefined relationship tension plays well. Overall, A BIG FAT GREEK MURDER is a fun mystery with engaging characters making it a great addition to the series.
